At Monday’s Quorum Court meeting, Judge Robert Akin brought up the matter of what to do about the tree on the north side of the courthouse. There is concern that the tree will cause foundation damage to the courthouse, and one recommendation was that the tree be removed.

Another recommendation was that holes be drilled and perforated pipes  inserted so that the tree can be watered at a deep level. David Taylor Hyatt addressed the Quorum Court, presenting a letter and discussing the historical significance of the tree, as well as the characteristics of the clay soil around the courthouse that may be the actual cause of damage to the building. Judge Akin as well as all members of the court agreed that none of them want any of the courthouse trees cut. Judge Akin also emphasized that he wants to minimize damage to the courthouse.  

A recommendation was made to contact NRCS to advise how to manage the trees.
