Drew Central Students Participate In Math Competition
January 28th, 2013 by Drew Central SchoolsDrew Central Kindergarten through 8th grade students recently participated in a math competition on campus in which the support staff such as the secretaries, administrators, librarians, counselors, custodians, nurse, and cafeteria workers asked the students random math questions as they saw them throughout the day. If the students could answer a multiplication or addition fact, depending on their age, they were given a ticket. The students pictured here were randomly drawn from each grade level to receive a movie theater pass or age appropriate toy. The homeroom class with the most tickets also won software for their class.
This competition had a dual purpose. The first was to get the students to practice their math facts more outside of class, and the second was to have the support staff more involved with the student’s learning. Eric Davis, part of our custodial staff, was always surrounded by children wanting to him to ask them a question. He said that “this was amazing, it has a lot of potential, and the kids are begging me to start again.”
The second round of competition will start in February, and we are hoping to get the community involved this time.
