One-of-a Kind Painting Presented to the Museum

Recently, Michael Pomeroy of Clarksville, TN, a former Drew County resident, and Dan Coston of Fayetteville, also a native Monticellonian, worked together to create a one-of- a kind painting, which the Museum has been fortunate to receive. Pomeroy’s dad, Ed, who recently passed away, and he had a couple of old photos of the Monticello POW Chapel that was once located near the present-day fairgrounds.
There was a black and white photo and a colored photo. Pomeroy and Coston worked together to help Coston understand some of the detailed description of the altar as Coston had never seen it in person. Pomeroy has been fascinated with the history of the POW camp since just a young boy and had seen the altar.
The image is copywritten by Dan Coston (www.costonart.com). {Coston’s mother, Allene, is still a Drew County resident and active Historical Society member.} After finishing this painting, Coston gave it to Mr. Pomeroy, who contacted some framing friends, who donated their framing talents. At this point, he then presented this treasure to the Drew County Museum.
Quoting Pomeroy:
The painting is actually a “draft.” It is one of several that will be produced by the artist while testing various canvas sizes, levels of detail, backgrounds, etc. This particular painting was given to me by Mr. Coston as a thank you for supplying him with the only two known images of the chapel and for trying to help him fill in as many of the missing details, not easily seen in the photos, as possible. This was, as I was to learn, all part of the artistic process (fascinating in and of itself.) It was essential to having him form an understanding of the site and of the structure itself.
