500 Ton/Day Waste to Energy Gasification Facility Coming to SEARK
April 15th, 2022 by Joe BurgessThursday, the SouthEast Arkansas Economic Development District heard and approved a presentation to establish a “waste to electricity” recycling facility in southeast Arkansas, specifically at the Chicot County landfill site, near Lake Village.
The facility can process 500 tons per day of everyday household trash, which will use a rotary kiln to create steam, which makes electricity. Recyclable metals, as shown in the article, passed through the system, and our recycled through appropriate channels. The leftover material from the process has several construction usages.
A similar facility has been built in Inez, Kentucky, which was toured by SEADD, recently. It can be used as a best way to recycle “local manufacturing waste” from our area, in order to make preparation for how to process it, here.
Topics mentioned during the discussion which included several local judges, mayors , and other governmental representatives, included the facts that no pre-processing is needed, odors are contained in the facility, there is only a “low to medium hum” outside of the building, and that plastics and tires can be used as recyclables.
The most important part to local officials are the fact that this will basically eliminate the need for landfills in southeast Arkansas.
The business end of the discussion, covered local cities and counties paying a $45/ton (garbage dumping) tipping fee for SEARK counties for 5 years.
The possibility of expansion was mentioned in earlier discussions, and outside trash will likely be received to maximize the facilities benefit.
Railroads are an important reason this site was chosen. River access through the Yellow Bend Port, with the possibility of a railroad spur being added there is being discussed.
A railroad spur will also be built at the Chicot County site for unloading the extra waste that will be needed to meet the daily requirements.
This facility could provide 50 jobs to local employees, and will provide a “0” landfill option with “0” carbon produced benefit to southeast Arkansas manufacturing facilities.
