4 Units Destroyed in Dermott Apt. Complex Fire, Saturday
October 18th, 2021 by Joe BurgessSaturday morning at 10:25, the first 911 call came in reporting an apartment fire near the intersection of Hickory and Main Street, in Dermott.
The fire began in one apartment, then spread to the other three units, in the same bricked-in structure. When the first firefighter arrived, flames were already coming out of the apartments.
Fire departments from Dermott, Collins- Cominto, Lake Village, McGehee, and Halley assisted with battling the blaze, with 35 firefighters and 8 firetrucks.
Although the building and its 4 apartment units were a total loss, due to only being separated by wood and sheetrock, firefighters were able to use “fire curtains“ to keep flames from spreading to other nearby units.
At least 16-17 people lost their homes from the units that were destroyed.
The Dermott Fire Department and their community want to thank all departments and individuals who assisted in battling the fire for five hours. Your help is greatly appreciated.
