imageGovernor Hutchinson visited Monticello Friday, May 22 to conclude his month-long Computer Science Tour. Students at Monticello High listened as the governor gave examples of how computer science impacts every arena of life from agriculture, to medical doctors and manufacturing.

 Summer care educare Monticello Christian Academy’s daycare division, Educare, is now enrolling for their summer care program. Children 30 months to 7 years old are welcome to attend. We are open 6:00am – 6:00pm. Our summer session will begin Tuesday, May 26th. Each week will provide your child with a new adventure: Fun With Food, Around the World in 5 Days, and Fun at the Farm are just a few of the adventures we will take this summer.

Memorial Day Fire Destroys Mobile Home

imageMonticello firefighters were paged out Memorial Day afternoon to Florence Road, where a mobile home was engulfed in flames.

Sources at the scene said no one was home at the time of the fire,  which fully engulfed the residence.

Local Soldier Takes Part in NASCAR Memorial Day Tribute

imageimageUS Army Specialist Nick Deaton, of Monticello, was selected as 1 of 150 soldiers at Fort Bragg North Carolina to participate in the opening ceremonies at the Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca Cola 600 NASCAR race.

Spc Deaton was holding the giant American Flag along with his fellow soldiers,  holding the bottom corner of the flag under the stars.  Spc Deaton is stationed at the 82nd Airborne unit as an airborne infantry scout.

Nick is a 2012 graduate of Monticello High School and the son of Police Chief Eddy Deaton and Trish Deaton and DeWayne and DD Burchfield.

The Club will hold a potluck party on June 1 to honor Kay Koen who achieved the rank of ACBL Life Master at the Resort City Regional Bridge Tournament in Hot Springs.

Kiwanis Flag Fundraiser, Honor Service Members & Support Local Projects

Kiwanis flagsflagdeal copyThe Kiwanis Club of Monticello is once again planning to display flags on the town square and the courthouse lawn in honor and remembrance of our service men and women.

The flag project is a major fundraiser for Kiwanis each year. It helps fund projects such as bedroom makeovers for Drew County children in need, scholarships, and Christmas presents for needy children. The project also impacts our community by showing support of our military men and women.

MCA Student Receives Scholarships

imageKatie Harris, senior at Monticello Christian Academy, was recently awarded the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship.

She also received the Leadership Scholarship from the University of Arkansas at Monticello.

Harris is an honor graduate of MCA as well as this year’s Valedictorian. In total, Harris has received $18,000 thus far in scholarships.
