The Monticello City Council passed a resolution authorizing the acceptance of a bid by Toter, Inc for the purchase of 3,000 rollout trash carts. The bid by Toter was the low bid and came in at $134,700.00.
The City will purchase one can per residence, and a second can may be purchased by an individual for $55-$60.
Trash pickups will be moved to once a week, per ward, once the new cans are in place.
More background is being discovered about John Michael Carty, the Armed Robbery suspect from Oklahoma, that was arrested by law enforcement officers, Tuesday, north of Monticello.
Around 5 pm, Thursday, Drew County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to HWY 83 North, where both lanes were blocked by a Freightliner log truck that was jack-knifed, jut north of Rabb Road.
The driver told MLive that as he came around the curve (northbound), he saw a tractor, and hit the breaks, which caused the empty log truck to begin to skid, causing the wreck.
No one was inured, Reliable Towing towed the big rig from the wreck scene.
According to Superintendent Mike Johnston of Drew Central School District,at their recent meeting, the demolition of the red brick building is 56% complete. He said that all walls and windows have been removed, plus the brick is down on about half of it.
Bricks are being cleaned and stacked for future use and salvageable wood will be taken, refurbished, and used to make furniture.
Around noon, Wednesday, the Monticello Fire Dept. was called to Bio-Wood, a sister company of Maxwell Hardwood Flooring, to a report of a fire in a dust and shavings silo, and attached elevator.
Firefighters battled the heat and the height, as they climbed to the top of the silo, to open the vents, to extinguish the blaze.
The fire is believed to have started with a bearing in a motor, and was contained to the silo and elevator areas.
MFD was called back to the silo, around 3 pm, and where on the site for around 2 more hours, battling flair-ups.
The driver of this Saab convertible had a scary ride this morning, around 10:30, when she lost control of her vehicle on HWY 425, north of Lacey, as she was traveling north.
The Saab crossed the ditch, and struck a tree, as it crossed over a creek.
The car came to rest with it’s front wheels and back wheels on different side of he creek.
No one was injured. Arkanss State Police worked the accident’ C&L Wrecker towed the convertible.
Monday night, the Quorum Court approved an ordinance transfering operations of the hospital to Drew Memorial Hospital, Inc. The ordinance also approved a lease of the facilities to the board, which is made up of the current DMH board of directors. Also October 9 was set as a special election day for two DMH millage questions.
The 44 year old man, arrested by MPD after a local business owner entered his shop, Saturday, to find the stranger holding his cash register, received a $15,000 bond, Monday afternoon.
Tony Glynn Irons, currently from Monticello, told District Judge Ken Harper that he had taken a “#10 Valium and a Xanax” together for the first time, and didn’t remember anything else until he woke up in jail.

The Monticello 12 year old boys all-star team finished first in District and second in State tournament.
They have qualified to compete in the Regionals, in Lemesa, TX, leaving on July 18th.

Thursday Morning, just before 10 am, the Monticello Fire Dept. was called to extinguish a fire on Commercial Drive, off of Airport Road.
At the former Southeast Trust factory, a cutting torch had reportedly been used to disassemble some equipment for scrap metal. After the workers had left the area, the sawdust under the machine smoldered, and eventually caught fire.
It seems no damage was done, since the machine were already scrap.
The driver of this Chevy Monte Carlo was southbound, Thursday around 11:45, when the vehicle hydroplaned, spinning around, and crossing into the northbound lane.

The accident occurred on HWY 425 North, near Cablevision. No one was injured. MPD and MFD responded, Rod’s Wrecker towed the Chevy.
At Wednesday’s MEDC meeting, Benji Rybrn, on behalf of Ryburn Automotive Superstore, the National Automobile Dealers Association, and the Arkansas Automobile Dealers Association, presented the Workforce Training Center with two cardiopulmonary resuscitation dummies.
The dummies will be used for training students in their upcoming healthcare classes.

Prosecutor Thomas Deen confirmed to MLive that the prosecution, “intends to seek the death penalty for Daniel Pedraza,” the deceased infant’s step-father, in the case.
Re-disticting of school board boundaries is required, due to the 2010 census, just like it was for the city council and quorum court.
All school board seats in both districts are up for re-election in the upcoming September 18 election.
