$18 Million Tax Questions Faces Quorum Court, (Again) Tonight: Hospital or Event Center- Either, Neither, or Both
September 28th, 2015 by iPhoneTonight, at 7 pm, the Drew County Quorum Court will again be faced with making an $18 million decision.
A very similar set of questions facd the JPs last week, but their decision was “no decision.”
The question is whether Drew Memorial Hospital will be included in a special election on December 8 to recieve “a 1/4% replacement tax,” after the 1/2 cent library tax expires
The other half of the question is whether the proosed Monticello Event Center, a multi-purpose convention-athletic center will also recieve a 1/4% tax.
Either, neither, or both items could be on the ballot to receive $9.775 million, from the proposed sales tax that is expected to last around 18 years.

In my opinion that money could be better used to develop areas around LAKE MONTICELLO for camping and up keep to bring people , and money, into Monticello. The closest places for camping is Cane Creek , money for Star City or The Cut-off Creek areas, money for Dermont.
Drew Memorial all the way. I don’t see the need for a convention center but a modern health care facility is necessary.
I think we need to do something for everyone in the community not just a few to just fill there pockets. Lets build a center that can be used by everyone!
Not a good to start focus on one project when the quality of the original project leaves a lot to be desired. Hospital stay at DMH is a bit lacking.
Why not let the taxpayers keep the money and send it as they please,
something at the Lake would be great. Lots of us go all the way to Lake Village. In my group. some family is going camping all summer. Hate having to drive so far. And the hospital is great. We don’t have to drive to Pine Bluff or Little Rock. A center will not turn much. The camping would bring more people.
To the two “no” votes quorum court members…..you is for letting the public to vote/or not vote. Many items the public can not vote on, that is why you were elected. This item, the public can vote…..I say do not take away my right to vote. Let me decide to vote yes or no on the issues.
i will say it again. first this building is to be built on College property? the college stated they will donate the property for the building. so if this where to be built? who will own the building? Drew County? the city of Monticello? or will it be the property of the College? for what reason do the people of Drew County need this building? i do not see a out cry from the people of Drew county to build this thing. it only seems to be just the college and a select few in Drew County that want this building. there are many more needs in Drew County and the city of Monticello then this building. JOBS better roads and streets, water lines that do not leak. who is going to be the one that gains from this building? it will not be the tax payer. there has been a lot of promises made to Drew county and the city of Monticello for economic growth over the years how many have come to light? you can count more that has left here then has come. time to put the needs of the people first.
need help with the streets of Monticello, and the water pipes, need it BAD on the east end of town!!!!!
sounds like this may turn into an issue like the city had with weather to build or not to build a new fire department
I think DMH needs to show that the hospital and staff can provide quality care with the facilities they have first. Building onto the hospital is not going to increase quality healthcare for the Monticello community.
We have good doctors in the community but the hospital patient care leaves a lot of room for improvement. Every time I have to go to that hospital, I pray that they will not kill me there.
We need an urgent care clinic in Monticello more than we need to be paying for more hospital space managed by the doctors in the community.
Provide good patient care and show good financial management of funds and I would consider paying tax for expansion.
This would be a new tax. No new taxes.
10% sales taxes are just way too much.
I remember when they were 2%.
