June 5th, 2014 by iPhoneAt Tuesday’s special called Monticello school board meeting, board approved the next step in constructing a $760,976 turf for Hyatt field , a $516,680 technology building, and a $315,619 fieldhouse, also at Hyatt Field.
Although many residents may find the athletic improvements controversial, some of the intended benefits are discussed below.
The 2 foot north to south slope on the field will be eliminated or reduced.
Upkeep and maintenance will be greatly reduced.
Weather related problems will greatly reduced because of the underground drainage.
The artificial turf is much more appropriate for soccer games.
The overall appearance will be greatly improved, for events such as band marching contests.
The new turf has an expected life of
10 to 15 years.
The new appearance will affect not just football play; but soccer, pee-wee football, and many other community events.
The school superintendent has drafted a letter detailing the restrictions on savings from bond refinancing, that designates the savings be used for construction purposes, and the status of Monticello school facilities. That letter is posted in another article.

Although I believe the project is going to be a great improvement for both the school and the community. I do sometimes wonder if other sports and/or programs are under funded or neglected due to focus on the football team. This seems to be a trend at most schools and universities. As a parent I see multiple fund raisers come through my house to raise money for different organizations that my children are involved in. As a football player at Monticello I don’t remember ever doing any such fund raisers. I realize that football creates more revenue than other programs and that has a lot to do with it. I just think it is something the school officials may want consider.
However I am excited about the improvements!
Awesome news.
